Omar Hammami Added to Most Wanted Terrorists List

On November 14, 2012, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that Omar Shafik Hammami was added to the Most Wanted Terrorists List.  He is wanted for providing material support to terrorists.

Hammami is a U.S. citizen, and he has previously gone by the name Abu Mansour al-Amriki.  He resided in Daphne Alabama, and he is believed to have provided material support to a known terrorist known as al Shabaab.  Shabaab was labeled as a foreign terrorist by the Secretary of State on February 26, 2008.

The FBI reports that Hammami moved to Somalia in 2006 and joined al Shabaab’s military.  Hammami helped fight on the front lines when forces from Ethiopia invaded Somalia in 2007, and he eventually became a leader of the military wing.

Hammami was originally named in an indictment on November 27, 2007 for providing material support to terrorists in violation of 18 U.S.C. 2339A.  He was named in a superseding indictment for providing resources to a known foreign terrorist organization in violation of 18 U.S.C. 2339B.  He was just placed on the Most Wanted Terrorists List today.

He goes by the aliases Abu Mansour al-Amriki, Farouk, and Farouq.  He has brown hair and brown eyes, and he is about 5’11” and 160 pounds.  He has a light complexion, and he knows Arabic, English, and Somali languages.

Hammami is considered armed and extremely dangerous.  The FBI encourages nobody to take action against Hammami individually.  If you have any information about Hammami or where he is located, you should call the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI or call the FBI’s Mobile Division.  You can also contact your local FBI field office or American Embassy or Consulate.
